Bell Work
“What is Poetry? What does it mean to you? Why do you think it means this to you?”

Lesson steps:
After the Bell Work, tell the students that they will be beginning a unit on poetry, and that they’ll be required to keep a poetry notebook to keep all of their work in. Hand out the worksheet and the rubric and then go over both so the students know what is expected of them.

After this, take the students into the library and have them do a Poetry Webquest – what they don’t finish in class they can take home and finish or finish on their free time. The Webquest is the first assignment that goes in the Poetry Notebook, and it will be turned in with the Poetry Notebook.

Extensions and Differentiated instruction:
The lesson itself is designed to help students who aren’t necessarily verbal learners and learn better visually and with hands on activities.

Lesson Assessment
Indirect; making sure that the students understand the goals of the unit and the WebQuest.
